Insectivore world

Description

Some speculative evolution. If, somehow (mass extinction, alien space bat, whathaveyou), all mammals on earth were to be wiped out except for the insectivores, what might happen?

1) This is an archetypal "new insectivore", specifically, a shrew descendant. The shrews produced the Soricoleids, which include effective predators that have been quickly radiating into a variety of forms and sizes. They rely primarily on smell, hearing and touch (whiskers) to hunt. The other thing labelled "1" is the head of this animal

2) another Sorcioleid, this time a herbivore that occupies a niche similar to a rabbit or small kangeroo. they are fast, breed like hell, and usually fucking adorable.

3) This is a large, omnivorous soricoleid. It has flat, crushing teeth equally capable of pulverizing vegetables and its own children, depending on the mood of their owner. It occupies the ecological role of today's pigs.

5) (I briefly forgot the number 4 existed) This is a superpredatory soricoleid, that uses its horrible rat teeth to dismember unfortunate mammals, and its badass eye scar to intimidate stuff

6) Finally, a shrew that remained small. This is Micropardus, an ecolocating leopard-print rodent-type thing that is a terrifying predator, if you happen to be a mole cricket.

7) Finally, the mole descendants. This is a member of the Isostyle lineage, which have shrunk to insect-sized protions and done away with eyes entirely, though they make up for it with the most bizarre noses in the universe. This particlar specimen has a comparatively standard nose: an articulate tentacle bearing uncanny strength as well as unparalled touch sensitivity. They animals themselves are eusocial, mostly sterile worker females descended from a dominant breeding pair deep within the hellish labyrinth of tunnels they carve into the landscape. Individual colonies can number in the tens of thousands of animals, and operate as a single unit to perforate the earth, attack predators, and find food.

8) another blind mole descendant, Natanella. This is an aquatic hunter, relying on sound and touch to locate fish and invertebrates, which it then devours with impressive speed (the idea isn;t that far-fetched: some moles today swim quite well www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCB2VT…). Its back bears a series of bony plates that provide both camouflage and protection from predators.

9) finally, the humble hedgehog has produced the Eridnodonts, The most massive of the new insectivores. This one is a herding plant-eater roughly the size of a cow. It can run shocking fast for its appearance, and the bulls can be considerably dangerous. Their spines are extremely dense on their backs, forming a thick, extremely tough hide, and many of them are partially aquatic, like hippos.
